Last week, second-grade students were given the opportunity to participate in Tanglewood Elementary's Journey Back In Time event!
With the hard work of the second-grade teachers, the school was transformed into an 1800s pioneer setting that was perfect for a day of learning about the past.
Students participated in activities from pioneer life such as: butter churning, panning for gold, learning to roll dough, sifting corn, learning to shave, making dolls, and visiting real
animals. Our ancillary teachers and volunteers helped to teach the students some of the different life skills they may have learned if they had lived during the time.
We also had wonderful guests present to further educate our students. Tom "Strong Buffalo" Varnado, a Native American historian set up a teepee and shared insight into the culture. Grandmother Margarite's Trunk demonstrated how clothing and textile goods were made. We also had Ken Raye, a leatherworking professional showing off his skills to students as they browsed his collection of hand-crafted goods.
The students were overjoyed that Deputy Pam and Mrs. Hicks were able to arrange to have animals like horses, goats, and chickens for the students to touch and interact with.
It was a wonderful day! A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Huber and Mrs. Ensminger for planning such a fantastic event. We can't wait to do it again for our second-grade students next year!
