LEAP Testing Information for Nonpublic Students

LEAP Testing Information for Nonpublic Students and
Approved Home Study Program Students

All students who enter grades 5 and 9 in public schools are required to pass the LEAP criterion-referenced English Language Arts and Math tests required by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Central Community School System will offer LEAP testing services to parochial/private school students and approved home study program students residing in the Central Community School System that are in grades 4 and 8 who plan to attend one of the public schools within our system.

LEAP testing will be conducted in 2 phases.
Phase 1: ELA writing and constructed response* math tests will be administered on
March 23, 2010.
Phase 2: Remaining ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies tests will be administered on April 12-16, 2010.

Nonpublic students residing in Central Community School System may register to take the LEAP test beginning January 18, 2010 through January 29, 2010. There will be no possibility for appeals or special placement. There will be no on-site registration and students who have not completed registration prior to the testing dates will not be admitted for testing.

First time 4th and 8th grade students must attain a score of Basic in one subject and Approaching Basic in the other subject in order to be promoted to 5th or 9th grade. Students who fail to meet this requirement may not be promoted.

The deadline for registration is Friday, February 5, 2010 unless available seating is filled prior to that date. There will be a $35.00 fee accessed in a money order, cashier's check or cash form. Money orders or cashier's checks must be made payable to the Central Community School System. NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Parents will be reimbursed in the fall once the student has been registered and attends one of our schools within our system. Please know that this testing session runs concurrently with parish-wide testing, and your assistance is requested with the following:

1. Return the registration form along with your payment to the Central Community School System School Board Office, 13421 Hooper Road, Suite 6 - City of Central, LA 70818. The deadline for registration is Friday, February 5, 2010. Click here for registration form.

2. Proof of address/evidence of being bona fide residents of the school system. At least two of the following:

· Utility bill (one of the following) water, electricity, gas, telephone or cable.
· Property tax bill or homestead exemption application for preceding tax year
  (not land).
· Current medical or social security insurance address to residence located
   within Central Community School System.
· Current voter registration or drivers license, address must be in the Central
  Community School System.

3. Calculators, dictionaries, and thesauruses can be used on some portions of the test. Dictionaries and thesauruses will be needed on March 23, 2010 and April 12 and 13, 2010; calculators will be needed on April 13-15, 2010. We will not be able to provide these items since we are testing public school students at the same time. Students also should bring 3 sharpened No. 2 pencils and reading materials in case they finish early.

4. If your child is identified as 504, have the school your child currently attends complete a testing verification form if accommodations are provided for ADD, Dyslexia, or other related disorders. The 504 form can be downloaded from the Louisiana Department of Education website at www.louisianaschools.net. By law, we cannot provide accommodations to students unless they have been provided as a routine part of their instructional program during the school year.

Results of the test will be available in late May. We receive a master list at this time - (NO individual student reports), and we will notify you of your child's test results in a letter by mail. We will not discuss confidential information related to test scores over the telephone. A complete report of the results from your child's test will be shipped to us.

For students who are preparing for the LEAP, encourage them to sign on to PASS. With questions formatted similarly to those on the statewide tests, the friendly environment of PASS allows students to become more at ease with testing. Students also receive helpful instructional feedback and detailed explanations as they work. At grades 4, 8, 10, 11, students can submit their written constructed-response items to be hand-scored, and they will receive score details and rubrics back within two school days. Teachers or parents can review these report details with students for valuable instructional opportunities.

Students log in as follows:

On the Internet, go to www.louisianapass.org
Use the first-time screen name and password to log in:

First-time screen name: student
First-time password: tiger

After logging in, students must make up a screen name. It is important for the student to write down the screen name and the password the computer assigns. This screen name and password will be needed every time the student logs in.

We are glad to have the opportunity to assist you with testing services.
